His strategy was to lead and participate in demonstrations and marches and offer no resistance to being arrested. He called it passive resistance which was totally non-violent. By doing this, he would call attention to unjust laws and hope it would influence public opinion which in turn would force legislators to change those laws.

Martin Luther King also borrowed some of his ideas from H.D. Thoreau. He felt that violence is often met by violence, peaceful protesting (passive resistance) was the best route. However, the civil rights movement was met with violence. The rest is history.
