It really depends on what you are doing with it and how long you need it to last. The plastic will clean up faster and is a bit more durable. If you need it for a one time job, cardboard works great.

to be honest brass is best ,it can be bought in thin sheets of various sizes and gauges ,its easy to work and withstadns chemical cleaners
if you only intend to use it once perhaps some poster bord will serve you well
