I don't think they were, nor do I think they're happier now. Happiness is not found in people collectively, but individually, thus a person can have just as much happiness as a person in the past.

Horse and buggy slowed the whole world down.
Today we live such a fast pace. Especially because of the airplanes and automobiles.
Happier, because Christ was in more lives.

People were poor. They raised their food. They canned their food. They appreciated this food in the winter.
Their distractions were work. They did not have modern conveniences. They appreciated getting this work done.
Their thoughts were to survive, they didn't have time to get depressed.
I think the major issue would be appreciation for what they did have and had accomplished. Makes one happy. The children helped from a young age. They wasn't bored (a word I hate). They had work to do.
When they did socialized, it was with appreciation, glad to see someone besides their own family, they appreciated the social contacts.
They had to work for everything they had and appreciated it so very much.
Not well organized but maybe you get my meaning.

less corruption, less disease, less gadgets, less religion, less judgment, less materialism. People were honest and honorable. I think in basic it was just a lot more simple than it is today.
