You might like James Patterson. He has a series of a character called Alex Cross. He is a family man raising kidds with his grandmother and fighting serial killers. In the books made into movies...Freeman Morgan plays Cross. Also books by John Sandford. He has a character called Lucas Davenport. A MI. policeman that specializes in really bad guy crimes. He also designs game software so he has money. Whole series of that character is great. Lawrence Block books are good too. He has a character that steals but is supposed to have stopped and run a old book store. Bernie gets into trouble when he steals and has to figure out the crime that looks like he did it when he was stealing.

Michael Connelly has a series of books out where the main character Harry Bosch works out of Hollywood Homicide. Patricia Cornwell's Kay Scarpetta series is absolutely riveting.

You just described Jeffery Deaver's (first name spelled correctly) formula. He's great. You never run out of surprises if you haven't run out of pages. I recommend The Devil's Teardrop and The Blue Nowhere.

Have you tried any of Michael Connelly's novels? They're fictionalized crime.
I recommend his Harry Bosh series. I first picked up "The Concrete Blonde" and loved it.

I think Nelson DeMille is just great. I recommend "The Charm School" and "The Lions Game". Great pacing, and wonderful, thoughtful storylines.
Happy reading!
