If you asking the name of great batsman, there have been many great batsmen in the game of cricket. However, considering the batting records set by the batsmen, Sachin Tendulkar holds many batting records and as such he can be considered as the best batsmen based on these records.. However, he has been out of form of late and has not been performing well. Hence he cannot be considered as the best batsman at present. Ricky Ponting of Australia can be considered as the best batsman at present as he is very consistent in his batting.

In case what you want to know the defenition of great batsman, my answer is a person who can bat consistently well in any type of pitches under any condition against all type of bowling can be considered as a great batsman.

I detect some bias, it is impossible to omit the batsman with the most test runs, the highest test score, the highest first class score and more.
The great batsmen will include Lara, Tendulcar, Ponting, Sobers, Bradman and many more.
Who is the greatest? Ever? We'll argue forever.

In my College days (1970-72) my friends used to tell me about Kazipet English which is being used by Railway people. Ex. What men where you are going. The question is also having similarity. Am I wrong? Still asking questions on Cricket is surprising me. Whether it is confined to India, or In the World, no clarity in the question. However, I rate Gavaskar, G.R.Viswanth, Mohinder, since I am following cricket in this generation. Keeping the circumstances prevailed then. Now my /our beloved great little master Mr.Tendulkar.

a great batsman is one who helps his team during an adverse situation and bails them out of trouble and brings them on course to victory.By the above criteria,SACHIN can never be a great batsman as he only has 3-4 innings that has helped INDIA.My vote would be for Dravid who bailed the Indian team out of trouble many a times and also Steve Waugh who with his all-round talents saved his team &also BEVAN.
