Predicting the apacolypse has been going on since Nero was throwing Christians to the lions, every turn of the Century, every end of the millenia, the 7th Day Adventists had their day in 1912, the Jim Jones cult and wacko in Waco both had their days, every passing of Haley's comet, eclipse of the sun and other end-of earth prophesies that i'm sure i missed. One thing you can be sure of, the arsenals of the US and Russia can obliterate a million Hiroshimas.....anyway, sleep tight.

I've always wondered that myself. Dec. 23, 2012, ever since I saw this video in my sophomore english class about the Mayans and the Mayan calendar. It may not necessarily be the end, though. They say that the fourth calendar ends on this date, but it could just mean a new period will start. Maybe a new world, or a new exisistance. It's pretty interesting if you read about the Mayan calendar and the major shifts in history that have occured on the dates that their calendar ended.
Who knows what will really happen, but all I know is I am totally living life to the fullest, especially on Dec. 22nd, 2012!!

It could be if we turn it into a self-fulfilling prophecy. ... Although I must say, I am not quite sure what you mean by "the end"? Do you mean the end of humanity as in a run away asteroid colliding with the Earth (e.g. a 2012 Mayan-like prediction/phenomena where we have little say in the event) or an all-out Nuclear War (i.e. a doomsday scenario that we could potentially avoid)? ... Or do you mean the end of consumerism fueled by greed (i.e. civilization as we know it) and otherwise unsustainable human domination of the planet and all its creatures?
Remember, humanity is like cancer, it feels obliged (by its very nature) to procreate out of control and destroy the host even if that spells its own doom "in the end". At this point the best we can hope for is turning humanity into a self-limiting dormant virus that knows when to stop before it completely eats its way out of house and home. Unfortunately, we are still decades away from being able to create and maintain a permanent space-based civilization that can become completely self-sustainable and independent of the Earth. In other words, if an Armageddon-style event occurs between NOW and THEN, it may well mean the end of humanity. Oh and BTW, don't you go around thinking that the Universe would give a rat's @ss about the loss of us either – we are NOT as special as we seem to give ourselves credit for! The Universe didn't blink an eye when 300 million year old dinosaurs were wiped out, all but in a flash. Humanity, if lucky, barely has 3 million years of claim on this planet, and that includes our humble Ape-like beginnings. Who knows, perhaps as in the dinosaur’s case making room for the mammals, it is time for the mammals (in particular human beings) to make room for other evolving creatures. Intelligence, in the end, is NOT about being COOL, it’s about playing the SURVIVAL game – if we are not smart enough to find a way to survive, Nature/Universe will see to it that we are HISTORY, one way or another.

I don't think so.I think the end of HUMANITY(not Earth) will be in the next 100-150 years, and the end will not a wonder..rather something you knew from the begining. But if you really beleive it it may happen that you will die till 2012,because of stress..

I don't think so, but then again I'm a Christian post-millinialist. I've heard world coming to an end date predictions before, and they haven't been accurate yet. I'd be curious to know what the prediction was based upon, the 2000 prediction didn't have much evidence.

Yes. It will spell the end of 2011 as we know it.
No, silly. That was the limit of the Mayan ability to calculate the calendar into the future based on astronomical observations. Jeez.

Yes. It's the end of our limited perceptions about the nature of reality. Following this quantum leap, each individal will finally realize that they are a part of a whole and not separate from other matter. We are one. Even the rocks share our essential personality. Look closely into the nearest rock and you will see a mirror of yourself.

Nope. The people making the Mayan calendar were told to keep working on it until money ran out. The money ran out in 2012 so they got laid off.

NO.
The idea that the world is ending is based on the falsehood that the Mayan calendar is ending. Since the Mayan calendar's not ending, that means anything based on that idea is false.
