I have a small 9 liter/2.3 gallon fishtank which holds a few saltwater fish. I'm pretty sure i'm supposed to change about 1 third of the water every 5-7 days but how do i clean the bottom of the tank? I have put a layer of sand on the bottom and i don't know how to separate the sand from the uneaten pellets or fish waste... any help?

Since your tank is so small, you could skip the gravel vacuum and just use a piece of flexible tubing to siphon the bottom, or buy a piece of straight rigid tubing to put on the end that goes in the tank. You can control the flow rate by bending the flexible tubing, which will keep you from siphoning up too much sand, or let it fall back out if you catch too much. It takes a little practice to get good at this technique, but it works.

use a syphon and hold an inch above the sand, move in a circular motion and it will suck the grub up leaving the sand behind.

a 2.3 gallon is far too small for any saltwater fish though...

Try asking the pet store you bought your fish from they should have something to make changing the water easier .When i use to have fish and had to clean the water i bought some type of suction hose that you put in the water to empty it out quicker but i can't remember what it was called sorry and GOOD LUCK!
