For those of you too young to remember, Joe McCarthy was a raving drunk. He was assisted by such stellar personalities as Richard Nixon, one of the greatest presidents ever, and and Roy Cohn, a homosexual. So we have a drunk, a liar and a homosexual presiding over the procedings.
I remember watching these hearings on the news with my family, and even to a 5 year old, it was obvious that this was a put up job. Some of the people who were blacklisted never worked again. Others wrote under pseudonyms and were able to get their work out. One in particular, Dalton Trumbo wrote a few minor films - Spartacus and Exodus. Ring Lardner wrote the original screenplay for M*A*S*H.
I am not a fan of Sean Penn (mediocre actor) Rosie O'Donnell (loudmouth abrasive flannel wearing rugmuncher) or Alec Baldwin (less than mediocre actor) but only a fascist or a communist would suggest that they be blacklisted.
I would suggest that you re-examine your own opinions to see which of them might land you in the gulag, before you suggest that others be sent there.

And how did that whole McCarthy thing turn out? Is he remembered for being great or being the center of one of the darkest periods in American history?
I'm not surprised that RLP would align herself with someone like McCarthy considering that she is the second coming of Eva Braun.

When I was a youngster, my dad told me that the likes of Senator McCarthy were actually helping the Communists. McCarthy kept the country divided and pointing fingers at each other. We were so busy calling other Americans Communists that we lost sight of who the real Communists were. My father is a wise man.

Of course! Opinions shouldn't be allowed to be said. We should all agree with the government no matter what and vote republican all the time because YOU say so. And at least if we all do that a 1 party state is easier for the people! We don't even get to have an opinion.
Wow, you know! For someone who wants to stomp out opposing opinions you sure sound a lot like you really know what America means. (sarcastic)

NO.
But what should happen is that movie goers who do not support what they are saying should stop going to their movies.
It says something about us I think, when we say with our mouths that we don't like what the Hollywood celebs are spouting off about, but then we go in record numbers to their films.
If we just quit going to the anti-American actors movies then maybe they would get the point. But then again, maybe they wouldn't. Remember the Dixi Chicks? The country music fans stopped buying their albums as an exercise of THEIR FREE SPEECH and the Dixi Chicks said that they were being black listed. No... they weren't they were just dealing with the backlash of their acitons. However; recently, the Dixi Chicks have seen a slight resurgence in album sales, and they feel "vindicated and justified" becasue of it.
In other words, we shouldn't even mention something like boycotting unless we are serious. It shouldn't matter if its the latest film that you've been waiting to see for the past 3 years and it's supposed to be better than the first one. If you, or I, or whomever is serious about our convictions then we should stick to our guns and not see the fillm, thus not supporting the actor/actress who has said or done the offensive thing.

I think FREEDOM OF SPEECH should be reviewed again because according to that they can say all they want. Liberty comes at an expense that;s why have you noticed these celebrities are all words no action. I do not agree on every point of liberalism especially from celebrities because last thing ROSIE (and others) is....is a role model.

"VO" Joe McCarthy was a clown who harmed the Congressional efforts to expose communists in the US. He was a drunken, camera-hogging bum, unlike the sober and serious and patriotic men who'd working for years against communists, such as in HUAC.
As for the "blacklisting", the fact is that the Congressional hearings only exposed these people as card-carrying communists, who had tried to hide their affiliation. They otherwise did nothing to them. It was the studios and producers who blacklisted them.
And we don't need drunken fake-war heroes like "tailgunner Joe" McCarthy to know these people are ultra left-wing idiots. They haven't hidden that fact from us. In fact, we can't get them to shut up about it.
As for blacklisting, that won't happen, obviously. If you choose to not spend money on their movies, to not watch their shows, to write to the sponsors of their shows and movies and tell them you will boycott their products if they continue sponsoring them, if you want to protest and demonstrate against them, then you are excercising your full panoply of free speech rights.
But that's the limit of what you can do. And that is far more than the government has the authority to do.

Whether you agree with these people or not, they have the right to free speech just as you do. That's the law in America. And the fact that criminals like McCarthy violated that law doesn't make them heros--it only shows them and their supporters up for the narrow-minded and unpatriotic bigots they are.

McCarthy's witch hunt was one of the most horrible things that ever happened in this country. We don't need anything like that to happen again. If you will pay attention you will notice that some of these people are ending their careers all by themselves without any help from outside. We do have freedom of speech here. Let's keep it that way. You are entitled to boycott anyone you want. I never watch Jane Fonda movies.

Jr. senator Joe McCarthy who was a chicken farmer. He stood against senators, and the government. One man did this. He did it for all Americans. The people you want blacklisted are American citizens please don't smear my idol around like that.
