Take a look at the Bumbo Chair. It can help them develop some neck muscles (first key for sitting up). They sell them at everywhere from Toys r Us, Target and sometime walmart.

At about 7 months a baby should be able to sit up unsupported.

sounds like your MIL is taking control of your baby--step up now and put your foot down before it's to late--at six months they can sit up fairly well but even if they can't (if you're not disabled in some form) you can give the baby a bath--nothing to it actually ---just lie it down in the warm water and hold its head up and start washing and enjoy ur baby.

They have these special chairs that help an infant sit up earlier than they usually would....otherwise around 5 months.
Why can't you bathe your baby now?

Most will sit up by the time they are 6 months old. (at least with minimal support)

If you're this impatient with an infant - then why did you have a child!!!!!!!! Children are a blessing - not a burden!!!!!!!
Babies normally sit up, on their own, around 6 months of age.
You are the parent and you are there to mold them into being a great adult human.
If you can't deal with one child - then please don't have more...
Last week there was a mother asking when her newborn was going to get up and walk.................................
Kids DO NOT COME OUT OF THE WOMB ready to fend for themselves!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
