I think it is sweet, we should appreciate our mothers! But I probably won't be buying mine a necklace or anything but that is just because I'm broke.

Valentines day doesn't have to be your parents - it can be a sweetheart or you can just give out Valentines Day cards or chocolate etc. to friends to show you care. If you're working or going to school, you can put a Hershey's kiss (little foil-wrapped chocolates) on everyone's desk. As for the Mothers and Fathers Days, in our church for instance, on Mother's day, every female gets a flower. It doesn't matter if you have children or not. And the same on Father's day too. If you have someone older that you are close to or admire, you can adopt them as your parent. Or you can bring flowers to an old age home. Many seniors are lonely and don't have anyone that makes them feel special. You'll be surprised how good you can feel with Random Acts of Kindness. It's often a better feeling than receiving a gift yourself. You get to see how you made their day with a simple gesture. Try it, I think you'll be amazed at how good you feel. :)

Of course retailers are trying to eek us out of every penny they can - it is the thought though that counts unless you're a money hungry gold digger (male or female on any holiday). Of course women think it's nice. Men like huge expensive gifts too. You know you've got your eye on something equivalent to the diamond she wants. Again - it's the thought that counts. Any smart man will think of his wife on behalf of their small children. Any smart woman would be ticked if he spent too much on her. Older kids - after 17 - should be on their own. One note though. She may not be your mother but she is a mother - to your offspring.

Now Now. You should give your wife "tokens" of affection but going into debt is silly. It's not just Mothers day & Valentine's Day. Advertisements do that with X-mas/Chanaukah, & Father's day too! Macy's, Kay Jeweler's , Sears & JC Penny among others spend millions to advertise for us to fill their pockets.

This has been going on now since the 70's. My children's father would tell me, "You are not my mother, so I do not have to buy you a gift." He would take our daughters to shop for me though.

the media is doing its job reminding lame brained slow men who are appreciative of the wonderful work thier wives have done being mothers to their own children that its a day for you to show respect and appreciation to your own mothers as well as the wives who have taken such great care of your own family. no shes not your mother(thank god) but lets show a little respect for the fine job she has done.

I think they've been doing that for many, many years now. I also believe it puts undo pressure on children as far as selecting a gift is concerned.

TV tries to commercialize everything. Valentine's day has been maxed out, so they're closing in on Mom's day.
