They're ignorant. These people are the type who think, "Ah, I'll be alright. I'm not going to get cancer!" I'm a pack a day smoker and even I know (deep down) that yes--one day I probably WILL get cancer (or at least a chronic condition such as emphysema) if I don't quit. I do have two young children, but I don't smoke around them at all, and I wash hands/change clothes before being around them. My sons are 2 and 3, and have never seen a cigarette.
What's the worst is when you see a pregnant woman smoking. God, don't even get me started on that!

The effects of secondhand smoke are generally exaggerated, but the situation you mention is really inconsiderate. Especially around developing children.
Look at the bright side though. Did you know that most children who grew up in such a situation have learned to despise cigarettes? So the bad adult behavior often yields a positive result when the child grows up.

I've wondered about this myself, I have a grandson that was raised by smoking parents, and he has constant, colds, sinus problems, he eats way too much. I think the parents are so enslaved by their addiction that it take precidence over all of their actions. To the detriment of their childrens health. Either that or they are so selfish they don't care who gets harmed by their smoke.

They do this because they are selfish. They are partially responsible for the creation of the anti-smoking movement. If smokers in earlier days had shown more courtesy and consideration for others, they might still be allowed to smoke in public places.

Because they're selfish and the addiction comes before anything...including the health of the children. Nicotine addiction is just as bad, if not worse than heroin or crack.

My parents smoked around us when we were little. Anyway, I go outside to smoke, however my child follows me and I'm constantly telling him to move away from me.
Hey, I'm trying.
