Here you will find all the info you need about Duesseldorf:

My recommendations:

Sightseeing: Benrather Schloss, Kunsthalle, Harbour, Koenigsallee (famous and very posh shopping mile), Aqua Zoo

Things to do: boat trip on the river Rhine - take a boat to Cologne and visit the Cologne Dome - go back to Duesseldorf by boat and enjoy the evening in the Duesseldorfer Altstadt, make sure to drink at least one "Alt"-beer, e. g. at the "Uerige" - opposite the Uerige make sure you try the herb liquor "Killepitsch" at "Em Kabuffke". For a fun night go to one of the pubs. There are a couple of great Irish Pubs in the Altstadt if you prefer to party with English speaking people. Have a traditional German dinner at a Brauhaus: my favourite one "Brauhaus Schiffchen" - great food, but very rich ;-)

Anything else you'd like to know?

Once you arrive in Duesseldorf start your journey at the Koeningsallee. It is the starting point of the sightseeing buses. Go to the tourist information around the corner of Koeningsallee to get a map of Duesseldorf and start exploring the Alstadt (old town) by foot. It is fun and before you know it 4 days will be over.

Don't know if you are into Theme Parks (Have you got kids?),but Movie Park Germany (previously Warner Bros.) is less than 40 miles away near Bottrop.
Other than that plenty of museums parks old buildings etc., in fact it's the same as any strang city you've never before visited --- Always some thing new to see.
Expensive? No more than any other german city. If you are from the U.K. you may find that groceries and some clothes are cheaper there than at home.
