I know some recreational users, and i know some folks who became hopelessly addicted and then got clean.
I beleive that all drugs ought to be legal. The jails are full of non-violent drug offenders and it costs us taxpayers a fortune. If drugs were available in controlled doses at pharmacies, and people had to be 21 to buy them, street dealers would be out of business, we could reap tax revenue, and children would have less access to them. Give any 15 year old 20 dollars, and he can get a bag of heroin easier than he can get a bottle of wine....dealers dont ask for ID! This is a pet issue of mine,we call ourselves a free country, but then tell adults what they can and cannot do on their own time. If my mailman wants to go home and smoke opium every night, what business of mine is it as long as i get my mail the next day?

As for the closed minded cop's opinion, if drugs were legal and cheap, then addicts would not have to steal to support habits.

As a narcotics detective, everyday I go to work I see how individuals, families, and communities are destroyed by the illicit drug trade.

The effects of drugs on the individual is obvious when the drugs become more important that personal hygiene, livelyhood, and family.

Where the other individual states that he/she doesn't care if their mailman smokes opium as long as he can deliver the mail the following day...I'd submit that when the mailman becomes addicted to opium then starts opening other peoples mail to remove kids birthday money, credit card applications, and income tax returns....what then?

Those who run out of money to pay for their illegal habit resort to taking from others who've worked hard to attain their assets yet have it taken away to support a drug abusers habit.

In fear of getting arrested, those who run from the police endanger others in their attempts to elude arrest.

Drug treatment works only if the person commits themselves to the prevention of further use! Drug awareness and education will hopefully teach our children that there are better ways to get "high" on life!

Some good websites below will provide some very good information concerning drugs and their effects!

that's no longer the situation. the situation is that many criminals from u . s . are imparting weapons to the drug cartels in Mexico and is the reason the ridiculously intense numbers of homicides down there, that's what President Calderon is saying. If the drug cartels did no longer have those weapons, then there would not be some many grotesque murders.
