I have a Dell Dimension with a Celeron 2.4 Ghz processor.. it has slowed up over time. It isn't the Internet speed, but the general processing speed, especially on start-up thats bothering me. Any good diagnostic tools?

So far, what makes most sense to me, are upgrading my RAM (like I said only 256 right now), and reformatting . As I am not a techie, would this be a risky endeavor??

downloading freeware/shareware programs that says it can speed up your computer can actually slow it down, uninstall any useless programs only use one antivirus program i recomend AVG this wont slowdown your computer like other antivirus software and make ure you always have atleast 2-3bg of free disk space
-if you all your installation cd and if you know how to format your computer then its better to just back up all important files and reformat and reinstall
-if you want do what I do make a back-up partition that put all important files and copy windows installation disk there, reformat your drive every 6months
my computer is a P4 2.4Ghz almost 3years old but its running like its new

All answers are very good advice. I would also say that you should run those utility programs in "Safe Mode" which will clean the computer as much as possible. I would also recommend that you increase the RAM. 256MB of RAM isn't near enough, not even if your running WinXP. I would boost the RAM to 1GB. A lot of the current memory is going to run the on board graphics, a reason to consider a PCI video expansion card with 256MB memory on it and disabling the on board graphics.

Is it only the startup that is slow? You can try doing this:
Start > Run > type in "msconfig" (without quotation marks) > Go to the last tab named "Startup" > Uncheck processes and programs you don't want or need to startup when your computer is being started. You can uncheck everything on this list if you feel like, but don't uncheck your Antivirus or any other necessary program you need to startup!
To clean up your computer, fix your speed, everything, you can download the trial (30 days) of System Mechanic, which can be found http://iolo.com/ here.

I too have an Inspiron: running a P4 3.2 Ghz with 2 G's of RAM.
Unfortunately, if you are anything like me, and are always using your computer for stuff... installing/un-installing, editing, gaming, etcetera... you may find that after a while, no matter what performance tools you use, it's just SLOW.
My only fix so far? I backed up my important data, and started from scratch. Took a couple hours, (lots of data), but presto, sucker's like new again!
Just a thought!
Cheers
Oh and by the way, sometimes no matter what you run, anti-spyware, anti-malware/grayware, anti-virus... it's all to no avail. I have several spyware/anti-virus/grayware/optimizers and have tried them all at one point or another.
Anyone who is into computers a lot, a format is a fact of computer life...

Same thing here..I have a Dell Celeron 2.6 with 1 gig of ram and a Gforce 5500 256mb card...runs incredibly slow on all applications. I get horrible framerates in games that ran much more smoothly on an older slower system that I had.

Have you scanned for Spyware? If no longer down load, replace and test with Spybot and Adaware. How lengthy on the grounds that you ran a diskcleanup? Is your force loose from fragmentation? This sickness can gradual matters down. Keep a examine on frag phases and in addition at the loose house.

If your PC used to be faster, it's probably infected with malware. Use the link below to learn more about "malware".
Then, you need to install: ONE Anti-virus (AVG free), ONE Firewall (Zone Alarm free), and Anti-spyware tools like: Windows Defender, Spybot, Ad-Aware, Spyware Blaster and cCleaner (free, use all 5 regularly).
Google for them, install them and learn how to use them.
TIP: Last resort, back up (copy to CD / DVD / external hard drive) all personal data and re-install Windows "Clean Install with Hard drive format". The apps above can only clean up so much crud.

like master chiefs said, you probably have many startup programms. try to disable some of automatic start up that is not very important. it is commonly located in general settings of a program. and try to run a virus scan. because viruses and trojans can make your computer slow..it also affect your system start up. i recommend you to use NOD32 in scanning or bitdefender..

you probably have many startup programs, if you do try to change their preferences so they wont startup when windows does, or jus run the cleanup wizard, and the defragmenter,(you will not believe how much unimportant files are hidden and how much they take up space)
