Is he jealous that Locke could also hear Jacob? and thinks that Locke will be his competition with the Others?

I think the island will heal Locke, just as it "cured" his paralysis. I think Ben is definitely jealous and probably also quite scared by John Locke. He seems to adapt the most quickly to any situation he is thrown into...he was the 'great hunter' that killed the boar, he was the first to commit to the hatch and the "numbers", while he himself didn't kill his father, he found a way to get it done, he has no problem standing up to Ben-whereas the OTHERS seem almost frightened of him.
Ben definitely feels threatened, but by shooting Locke, he may have caused himself MORE trouble. If Locke survives and returns to the camp of the OTHERS, he will definitely be a "hero" and the OTHERS will not revere Ben as much as they do now.

Yes, he appears to be jealous of Locke, the fact that he could hear Jacob. In fact I don't think Ben could even see Jacob and was just pretending. Also because Locke is deemed as 'special' and has a strong connection with the island.
I think Ben knows that Locke would make a far better leader to the others than he ever could.

Ben got his power on the island from being the only person that could communicate with Jacob. Once he saw Jacob attempt to communicate with Locke, he saw a threat to his power.
Also, when Locke was beating up on Mikhail, Ben noticed that none of the others helped Mikhail.
So Ben was dealing with a threat to his power.
(I don't think Locke will die. He's a fast healer.)

He did it out of jealousy.
As we have seen in this episode, Ben has some SERIOUS daddy issues. I think it warped his brain so much that when he found out that Locke could hear what Jacob said yet Ben didn't hear it he got really jealous and shot him.
They never showed Locke dying, and since he is such a major character I think they'd make sure we knew he was dead before cutting to a different scene.

Of course ... he is Ben's competition now ... and of course Locke isn't going to die, before he came to the island he was in a wheel chair, now he can walk ... so obviously, he wont die.
