Law on Euthenasia?

Question

I am living in South Africa & am doing a thesis on Euthenasia (legal in some countries,a death by injection/medication). I just wanted to know what the laws are in some other countries & peoples opinions on it???

I don't know if physician-assisted suicide falls under this, but I know that it's illegal here in the US. Several years ago, there was a big controversy surrounding a doctor, Jack Kevorkian, who helped terminally ill patients commit suicide. If I remember correctly, I believe he is now doing time in prison. However, if I'm not mistaken, I believe that physician-assisted suicide is legal in the Netherlands. Many years ago, I watched a documentary in which a Dutchman opted for physician-assisted suicide after he was diagnosed with HIV or AIDS. Personally, I have no problem with physician-assisted suicide, because I believe that people should have complete autonomy over their bodies and their fates, and if someone doesn't want to live a life of unending misery, he shouldn't be forced to.

Generally, it's illegal in the United States, however, it is a state law issue and I believe Oregon passed a so-called "assisted suicide" law a couple of years ago. This allows a physician to provide means (drugs) and method (i.v., etc.) and other assistance.

Personally, I am in favor of legalization although there are serious issues. I think that a person should be allowed to end their own life if they are suffering and no relief is possible. It is, however, an area where there could be significant abuse of the principle by persons with nefarious purposes.

Euthanasia is illegal in the united states. If you don't have a problem with assisted suicide on a moral and religious basis, then euthanasia is up your alley. I personally do not believe assisted suicide or non-assisted suicide is right, but would advocate a person's right to end his or her own life. Good luck with your paper.
