In Australia, I heard about SNOWVY RIVER PROJECT, which they completed well before our independence. The water in the river is simply wasted in ocean. They wanted to divert it to a dry area, if it happens this will turn them in to a prosperous region. But the had a hurdle. A bin mountain was standing in the middle and blocking the way. But except Indian there is nothing could stop them. The dig up a tunnel under neath the mountain and built a huge dam to store water and then opened on the other end and diverted the water.
It was a huge project completed successfully. Now more than 50years people are deriving the benefit.
Any thing can be possible, only if we have intention to do and willing ness to co-operate and learn.
If indian rivers are united, we indians could harvest GOLD.
But poor farmers don't understand all this.

I did a google search on this topic last year and came up with an informative govt website for this very subject. I think it was river linking or something like that. Didnt save it so I dont remember, but you could also do a search and find it. Dont you also agree that if rain water harvesting were to be made compulsory for every building and dwelling, the ground water levels would increase and this could augment the conventional supply of water ? High demand and mass production of RWH systems would certainly lower the price and the govt could offer tax incentives. But will they ? Unlikely.

There are many instances where rivers are connected. In China, there is a grand canal which links yangtze river (the third longest river in the world-at Hangzhou), yellow river and goes all the way to Beijing. Such things are only a dream in India.
