The city of Portland, Oregon has contracted with a local WIFI provider to allow us to have free WIFI downtown. When I enter passwords through their WIFI, how secure is it? Can someone else get onto my computer through the WIFI?

WiFi is not 100% secure and is also more vulnerable than Wired Networks, but are still successfully in use where wired networking is not possible any more.

Therefore security purpose, WiFi alliance has developed a more secure protocol than WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy), that is commonly known as WPA (WiFi Protected Access), with more complication for Hackers with the addition of TKIP (Temporal Key Integrity Protocol), RC4 Stream ciphers, PSK (Pre-Shared Keys) and Passphrases with longer lenght. This protocol is also certified by IEEE, having IEEE 802.11i.

So it can be concluded that now WiFi is much safer than its in previous days.

Depending on the WIFI security u could just ask the company that provides the WIFI but i dont think that it would be very secure.

It is as secure as swimming with sharks wearing a tourniquet.
If somebody wants to get your password or your information for that matter, they will get it. This include being able to see what you are browsing while on-line.

It depends.

Does the ISP have WPA enabled on it's free Access Portal? When you log in, does your browser show a "Padlock" on the bottom left or right?

If you're not sure, ask them before you trust their service.

It secure enough. But if you planning to keep your computer days and days on-line I would recommend you to install firewall program.

If you use 128 bit encryption (used by all transaction websites) you'll be OK.
