Legislative:
1. Consumer Protection Act 1986
2. Formation of 3-tier system of consumer grievances redressal agencies. The top tier would be the National Consumer Commission at New Delhi. The second is the state consumer commission and the last and most important is the District Forum. these are popularly called consumer courts
3. Each complaint is to be dispatched off in 3mths, and needs no lawyer. Write ur trouble on a piece of paper neatly, attach supporting documents like bill, warrantee card etc and send it to the district consumer court
4. Spearate Dept of Consumer Affairs formed at the state and federal levels
5. courts have disposed off nearly 13 lk cases. more than 500 district forums in India
6. But cases take too long still, to combat bottle-necks, the Act was amended in 1991 and 93
Administrative: Public Distribution System (PDS)
1. Gives food directly to consumers at fair price shops
2. subsidised prices (subsidy = market price - selling price)
3. expected to help poor obtain food and necessities like kerosene
4. will prevent hoarding, black-marketing and run-away inflation. also protect consumers from over-charging
Technical: Standardisation of Products
1. On scientific bases, standards for all products are set by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), New Delhi. Products with the BIS mark (for industrial and consumer goods) or Agmark (agricultural produce) show conformation to those standards. BIS was originally called Indian Standards Institute (ISI)
2. Through surprise checks and searches at markets and factories, standards are enforced (an eg is that incident when a Cadbury dairy milk was found with a worm in it, u remember that, right?)
3. Agmark in accordance with the Agricultural Produce (Grading and Marking) Act, 1937 amended '86. Controleed by the directorate of marketing and intelligence (DMI), Min of Agri, GOI. includes masalas, honey, spices etc
Internation Standards:
1. International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO), Geneva, NGO formed in 1947.
2. equivalent to India's BIS
3. ISO gives standards like ISO 9001:2000 etc to indicate various levels of conformity
4. like Agmark, internationally we have the Codex Alimentarius Commission formed in 1963 at Rome by the FAO and WHO of the UN
5. codex standards deal with milk, fish, milk products and other food produce
6. BIS and Agmark are trying to bring their standards in line with Codex and ISO

In India the legislative,technical & administrative measures to protect comsumer is provided by the Consumer Protection Act,1985 & The Monopolies and Restrictive
Trade Practices Act, 1969 (MRTP Act for short).

Depends on the state...in Texas consumers are protected by the DTPA (Deceptive Trade Practices Act).
