Primaries do not necessarily determine who gets the nomination; it's during the party convention that the actual nominee is chosen by all of its delegates from each state. However, during the last 2 presidential elections, the nominee was already a foregone conclusion long before the party convention (due to low-performing candidates dropping out early and of massive media hype for the frontrunners). In a sense, these party conventions are merely taxpayer-funded bashes for all the participants. I'd rather these political parties fund their own conventions.
