I am looking to buy my mother a sewing machine that is affordable (like 300) and sturdy. Preferably I would like the machine by Singer, but I don't know much about sewing. My mom has not sewed in about 2 years but prior to that sewed things like costumes or hemmed pants. Please if you know sewing machines give me an anwser; there is only 2 weeks before her birthday.

I have a kenmore machine from sears, and it is one of the best things ever. I love it so much and i use it all of the time, i have had it for nearly two years without any problems. It has a ton of different stitch functions, it comes with a bunch of different presser feet, and it has a digital side panal which makes picking out the stitches super easy. It's a little higher than the price your looking at ($350) but it's really worth loooking at, also there are aother good machines at Sears.

Todys best machines for an intermediate sewer is one that you can keep when you advance to the next level. So buy a good machine that will last. Today that is a Kenmore from Sears.

Don't get anything with electronics, they could break down and cost to much to fix. If you are doing simple garments you may not really need a machine with a lot of different stitches but what you do want at least is;

A needle threader,
a blind hem setting with the presser foot
an embroidery setting is a good plus.

What I suggest is buying something within $100 to $200 and then getting a surger/overlock machine as well. Most fabric will need a proper overlock.

Together expect to spend $350 for low end new for both to upwards of $500 to $600 for medium range machines.

Personally, I would stay away from a Singer. They used to make good machines a long time ago, but now not so much. For that price range several suggestions: Brother makes good machines in that range. A lot of folks like their Kenmores, however, to have it serviced it has to be sent away. A really good option, check out sewing machine dealers in your area. You might be able to pick up a good quality used machine from a dealer which would also mean it would come with a warranty and you would have a local shop for yearly cleanings and any repairs. Janome is a very good quality brand with lots of machines in that price range, both new and used. Good Luck!

There are two sewing machines on sale right now that are both really good and easy. One is at Kmart for under $100 and the other is at Target for under $100. If you go to their websites you can look up current advertisments and prices as well as reviews on them.

Brother is making some quality machines now, in that price range and lower. Also, I love my Europro, and I believe the prices on those are comparable. The downside to the Europro is finding a technician locally to clean and tune it.

Good luck, thats a great gift.

Any machine that has a soleplate that snaps off rather than having to be unscrewed. That way, she can clean it out every time she changes a bobbin, and it will last her a lot longer. You can do OK at department stores or even at Jo-Ann fabrics if they have machines in stock.

Singers and Brothers are about the best you can buy, especially if you just want a basic machine
