I don't think that the Korean Conflict is a very good example of peace keeping. There were actually 3 years of armed conflict, i.e. combat operations. I think it is a better example of peace making. I would not think it is a good example as well because the Soviets did not use their vote on the security council. They boycotted the vote which allowed the US to push through its plan of defending South Korea.

I think that the Suez is an important mission for the reasons listed above...first real use of peace keepers, Lester B. Pearson won the Nobel Peace Prize etc. I think that this mission ingrained in Canadians the idea of soldiers with blue berets and helmets acting like police and keeping the peace. I think the biggest consequence of this mission was to change the focus of the Canadian Forces from being a war fighting organization into one that was for peace keeping.

The effect of the mission was for Canadian foreign policy to advocate the use of soft force. It placed Canada well within the realm of other western democracies that used diplomacy to solve problems rather than force.

The Canadian Forces were also transformed. The organization as a whole became smaller and not as able to carry out large scale missions. A perfect example is the stress that the mission in Afghanistan is putting on the forces. They lack the people and equipment to sustain long operations.

I hope that helps :)

Well Suez is a pretty good choice since Lester Pearson, later Prime Minister of Canada, won the Nobel Peace Prize for coming up with a solution to the Suez Crisis.

I tend to think that keeping the peace in North & South Korea is important to the intire world. Canada should be able to relate to that as well as any peacekeeping mission around the world.

there is the Truce Supervision for the middle East from 1948. however the longest suitable peacekeeping challenge, as maximum next peacekeeping missions are like, could be Cyprus considering 1964.

First, you might want to ask whether or not there has EVER been a peace keeping mission that has ever been successful by the United Nations, probably one of the most useless, powerless, costly organizations ever dreamed up by humankind. Let us all in on the secret if you ever find one.
