i seem to be getting 2 signals from my wireless router one called default and one with the ssid name i gave it when i hooked it up. i originaly had my router going thru a hub to another router and had barely enough signal to pick it up but i had to resetup by modem to my router to the hub. when im really close to my router i cant pick up the default but from my room i pick up both and neither are strong enough to get connected. is there anything i can do? after 4 pm and weekends i cant acess my router to fiddle with it so if i cant get connected im screwed. im also looking into a thing called a cantina or bigger/stronger antennas for my d-link 524 router if anyone has advice about those things that be great too.

First thing i would do is check for firmware updates. This may be a known issue that was fixed. Second i'd give the router a hard reset. meaning, hold the reset button while unplugging it, continue to hold it down for another mintue or so after unplugging it. Plug it back in and release the reset button.

Well you may be seeing someone elses "default"! Since it appears every household in every neighbor hood is getting connected these days. I just did a view wireless from my system and can count 8 different wireless systems!

If you didn't reset the channel for your router from its default then you may be getting interference from another system on the same channel. The manufacturers seem to use 1, 6, or 11 as the defaults (those are the only Wifi channels which do not overlap). Your system will still see them in view available networks - too bad that does not show what channel they are using. You can download netstumbler software which will show what channels are active in your location.

What I would suggest is to log in to YOUR router and see what channel you are set on. Lets say it is 6 - try changing to 11 or 1 and then see if you have better coverage. You may have to experiment some with the channel settings until you find one that gives YOU the best coverage. Then be sute to enable encryption which will keep other users out of your system.

Becuase you're picking up someone elses signal that has the same router as you. That's why you're picking up 2 signals

subject is between Netopia Router && pc. = in case you paintings generally upstairs, pass your Netopia router there. - Low sign reasons: may be partitions/flooring which includes carpeting/plumbing/electric wires. - may be interference: different networks, cordless telephones, microwave ovens. - may be human beings jogging between router && laptop.
