I have to go with Ty Cobb and Cy Young

This is a tough one...Willie Mays - the ultimate 5 tool player has got to be on the list. Henry Aaron - the King and Ted Williams were great hitters. Cy Young holds a bunch of the all time pitching records - 511 Wins!

But, I've got to go with the Bambino. Most people don't realize that he was a Pitcher for the first 5-6 years of his career! Babe Ruth had almost 100 career wins!

For his Pitching and Hitting prowess, Babe Ruth is the greatest MLB player of all time.

Babe Ruth. Anyone who says any other player is needs their head examined.
Ruth hit 714 (untainted) HRs in WAY less at-bats than Aaron, and was a great pitcher to boot, and even did them at the same time for a few years. Not Hank, not Willie, and certainly not the overrated pitcher/thrower Nolan Ryan can say that.
Babe Ruth made the Yankees into a great franchise, made the live ball a permanent part of the game, and saved baseball after the Black Sox scandal. No one in baseball has had the kind of effect that Ruth has--not even Jackie Robinson. Nobody.

Babe Ruth because he hit and pitched and his impact on 2 teams, winning with the Yankees and so-called "cursing" the Red Sox. However, because of so many players, I would say the greatest player by position would be better, because Gehrig, Mantle, Jackie Robinson, Ted Williams, Rose, Aaron, Mays, Cobb, Cy Young to name a few would be deserving of honorable mention as all time greatest because of their impact on the game as well....

I HATE the yankees but I think Jeter is the greatest all around player of all time. He's got heart and is still enthusiastic after 5 titles. Is it me or does every body else see him run every ball all out no matter what? He's should be what everyone looks at as the ideal baseball player.

Babe Ruth. When he pitched for the Red Sox, he was regarded as one of the best pitchers in the AL. Moving to the Yankees, he was a great hitter. I can't think of another player in the history of the game that was both an outstanding pitcher and outstanding hitter. The Babe is the best of all time.

By just about every objective measure that I've ever seen (and there have been a lot of them), Babe Ruth always comes out as number 1.

Hitter - Mickey Mantle, Ted Williams
Pitcher - Nolan Ryan

I would say that Ruth is definitely the most prolific, though players like Aaron, Bonds (sadly), and Cy Young all have their places. We cant forget Cobb, Dimaggio, N. Ryan either. So the question "Who is the best?" simply doesnt work. It should be "Who is the best at ________?"
