After looking at all of the anwsers I am dissapointed to see that only two people picked Barry Sanders. He had no one in Detroit and still rushed for 15,269 in just 10 seasons. Thats an average of 1,526.9 yrds per season. If he didn't retire so ealry this wouldn't even be a Question.. Far and Away the BEST player to ever play.

This question needs to be dicected down a lot more since this is a team sport. I would give several names:
QB - Joe Montana
RB - Walter Patton
WR - Jerry Rice
TE - Kevin Windslow
LB - Lawrence Taylor
DE - Reggie White
DB - Deion Sanders
SS- Ronnie Lot
FS - Steve Attwater
And lets not forget the 92 Dallas Offensive Line.

The guy who, along with Sid Luckman revolutionized QB play and lead the league in interceptions as a safety to boot.
"Slingin'" Sammy Baugh
Wow, what a bunch of morons. "All time" includes two way players. Baugh is the only guy to win MVP and defensive MVP. Other than Don Huston there are absolutely no two way guys.

The greatest player is a tough question because it is so subjective and it is hard to judge unless it is based on position. The answer simply put is Walter Payton. LT (San Diego Chargers) may eventually become the best player ever but right now it is 'Sweetness'.

way too many players in the NFL just to pick one. I love watching Jerry Rice, Barry Sanders, and Joe Montana play though.

Please be more specific. It depends on what type of player a person would want to build their team around.
Let's do it like this. If I want to build my team around a:
1) QB - Joe Montana
2) RB - *Walter Payton
3) WR - Jerry Rice
4) TE - Shannon Sharpe
5) OL - Larry Allen
6) DL - Reggie White
7) LB - Lawrence Taylor
8) DB - Ronnie Lott
10) KR/PR - Gale Sayers
Being that I believe in establishing the run game first (because you don't have to have a great QB to win a superbowl; i.e. Ravens of 2000, Steelers of 2006, Redskins of 1991, etc.), I would say that my greatest player of all time would have to go to a RB. A great running game can make a better passing game and win superbowls. Think about it....John Elway (as well as other, good QBs) didn't get a ring until he got a good RB; in Elway's case it was Terrell Davis!
Therefore, my vote goes to....*Walter Payton. A superior runner, catcher, blocker, and overall leader. He possessed speed, power, endurance, longevity, and toughness. Career stats: 17406 yards, 112 TDs rushing; 514 receptions for 4716 yards, 15 TDs; all in 13 seasons of play (including postseasons). Add in a hall of fame induction, 9 pro bowls and one Superbowl ring (while playing on a not-so-superior team w/average QBs for at least half of his career), and you have a player that anybody can build a team around.
Honorable mentions go to: Emmitt Smith, John Elway, Brett Favre, Terry Bradshaw, Barry Sanders, Dan Marino, Dick Butkus, Ray Lewis, Jim Brown, Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, Marvin Harrison, Jack Tatum, Deion Sanders, and many others that I do not have the space or time to name. Peace....

Jim Brown has to be the greatest.
Check out these career stats. Remembering the guy only played 9 total seasons (also remember that the seasons were 12 and then 14 games per year)
ATT YDS AVG TD
2359 12312 5.2 106
That's 5.2 yards per carry, 104 yards per game and 1368 yards per season.
His greatest season was 1963:
ATT YDS AVG TD
291 1863 6.4 12
That was 6.4 yards per carry, 133 yards per game.
By comparison Walter Payton's best year was 5.5 yards per carry with a career average of 4.4 yards per carry and 88 yards per game. Take Walter's average and project against Jim Browns number of games and he barely breaks 10,000.
