i wonder whether buyers of fashion designs for the major high street stores or designers themselves are taking account of the views of, for instance, islam on how women should dress. the recent trend for patterned 70's style dresses over jeans or leggings not only looked bad, in my opinion, but was very modest. is there a subtle attempt to impose on western women the standards of modesty expected by ( some ) men of asian women ?

I doubt it. Designers are trying to sell clothes, and design according to what the major markets want. Very few islamic men are buying their designs, so the opinion of these men won't make much difference to the designers.
