You know I work in a Middle School and I see how some of these kids talk. and treat each other. It is very sad we as parents fail miserably teaching our kids about these two things. If we did we wouldn't have all these predjiduces and we would treat our fellow man better. I mean we all our different weather were gay, bi, str8, black, white or what. We are failing at teaching our kids to love things that our different.

because most parents idealistically attempt to raise their children to think that the world is perfect. They fail to expose their children to other ideas and other people, which only reinforces ignorance in their kids. As a teacher, it is your responsibility to foster tolerance and understanding for new ideas in your classroom and hope that this teaching will spread back to the childrens' families.

The problem is that most of the parents don't believe that these predjuices are bad. it's so like father/mother like son/daughter. These kids don't learn it on their own, they learn it at home, that's the real problem. You have to teach the parents first, then you can teach the children. We aren't clear yet of the older generation being clean of bigiotery, so how can we expect the kids to not pick it up at home. You can do the best you can at school to try and get the children to learn that all people are the same, but it's an uphill learning curve.

Humans are born designed to fear and hate difference. Why is everyone always so surprised that people fear and hate difference? It's hardwired into our systems and has to be unlearned to an extent in order to live in a liberal society. Parents don't have time to teach children this sort of thing, they're too busy paying the mortgage and earning enough dough to buy all the crap their child demands. It's in the NC now, as I'm sure you are aware, but children aren't really going to learn those sorts of lessons until they do so by experience. The truth is, everyone fears difference to some extent, and those who say they never do are lying. It isn't some sort of moral evil or thought-crime, it's a primitive-brain reaction to a perceived possible threat to self and community. Why can people not see this? Some then go on to develop it into something bad or evil, agreed, but the impulse itself isn't.

if the parents still aren't teaching their kids about diversity its because the parents are still upset by that possibility...that blacks, whites, gay, bi, str8, or whatever are actually as worthy as they are to have the same rights that they do.
That's the why. But to let you know....my kids know my stance about treating everyone with respect and basing their view of a person on their actions not their color, who they love, or even what another member of that kids family has done. (We can pick our friends but we can't pick our family.)

unfortunately most people think their ideas are the right ones and that their kids should just shoot up and agree.... it's kind of like brainwashing i think... :)
i have 2 kids and one on the way... kids are 6 and 7 and we try to teach... not force.... we try to get them to understand that it's not cool to make fun of or talk bad about people just cause they think or look different...
it's a team effort between my wife and i and we can do all that is possible but in the end.... when they grow up they too will think for themselves.. and they may be just as narrow minded as the majority of society... but here's hoping for the best

You're neglecting media influence, media has a huge influence, which goes both ways. Currently media in the USA is conservative to mirror the government, so some kids will be conservative as a result, lots of us though, through a ton of media exposure, know that different is just fine.

the parents are raising their kids the way that they themselves were raised and it is sad that they haven't grown as people themselves and they are spreading the bigotry to their children. My late parents did teach me to be open-minded of peoples' differences. I was very fortunate, too bad that these kids are not being taught the same thing.
