What were the different positions that developed within the Catholic Church during the Middle Ages?

Really hard to say. The Catholic Church keeps changing its "rules" so often, it is difficult even for catholics to keep up. The most recent, of course, is the church's teaching on Limbo which they now say was really never part of church teaching. Unfortunately for them , there are still those of us around who KNOW the church's teaching on Limbo and are once again stymied by their revisionist statement of facts.
