If you are in India, check out Galileo Telescope Maker in Mumbai. Excellent scopes, sturdy mounts, cheap prices.

Expect to spend 5000 - 10000 Rs

These are prices shipped to USA. Locally, they may be cheaper.

You want a reflecting telescope 100 - 150mm mirror, a sturdy mount and a couple of eyepieces.

The starting price for a quality telescope in the U.S. is $300, which is about 12,189.00 rupees. I'm sure you can find them for much cheaper in India though.

If you are primarily interested in planets and the moon then I'd say get a good sized apochromatic refractor, but this is thousands of millions of rupees.

So, I recommend you get a dobsonian reflector. This is a simple telescope yet it's simple mount means that you can get more aperture for your money. Aperture is one of the most important aspects of a telescope. The more aperture it has, the more light you can collect and the more you can see.
It will actually allow you to see planets, the moon, and galaxies and nebulas.

Do not get anything smaller than 4.5". Try to get the telescope with the most aperture you can afford. Typically I say to make sure it's a quality brand like Meade, Orion, or Celestron and possibly Zhummell or Konus as well, however, as the fiancial situation of the average Indian improves, many are taking an interest in aquireing a telescope and there are many small Indian telescope companies that produce telescopes that rival the optical quality of the well known brands, though the mounts are typically simple.

Be sure you buy some nice eyepieces for it and a quality 2x barlow.

actually you can get a reall cheap telescope to see the moon and planets. i hear walmart has some for under a hundred bucks. they usually only come with one eye piece about 25 mm if you can afford another eyepiece buy something around 9mm or smaller this will give you better magnification. the basic thing is that you get what you pay for. so usually the more expensive the telescope is, the better it is. but trust me the moon and planets look amazing, even in the smallest telescope. and you can even see nebulas and galaxies in one of these scopes... i hope this helps!!!!!

i have a small (2") department store telescope that shows the moon of nicely and you can see the rings of saturn and the moons of jupiter as well, only problem is that it has a wobbly mount so you have to be very still.

any telescope will show you these things, the main thing is the mount cheap scopes have cheap wobbly mounts.

If you spend anything less than about $300, (12500 rupees) you'll probably use it once and throw it away. Here's a good place to get some education.
