The 1879 double eagle ($20) gold coin has a value of $675 in grade very fine to $11,500 in grade mint state 63. You need to see a coin dealer to have it graded. i would take it to at least two dealers to get a better perspective of grade. A local coin club may help in grading the coin also.Unlike modern gold coins, you have one with a history. It may have just went from bank to bank, to back up their paper money, or it could have slid across the bar in the old west to buy a round of drinks for the house. The values quoted are about what a dealer would pay.

Going from memory only, I believe the value is $350 to $5000 depending upon condition of the coin and the karats. Look in your local phone book for coin collecters/brokers and see if you can get an answer there but you really should find a book on'' values of coins'' for collectors.Look at your local library or go to a book store and you will probaly find the book with your coin in it. Good Luck
