And when you do, who do you think about? Is it your current partner, a past lover, someone you have only fantasized about? Do you visualize doing things that you have not previously done with that person? I have often wondered about this.

That depends, on my situation and my time of the month. I was single for three years and during that time I almost never thought about sex. Maybe once a week.
I recently got in a new relationship, and now I think about sex probably once or twice an hour. I think about my boyfriend mostly, sometimes my exes, sometimes other people (men and women). I think about stuff we have done together and stuff I'd like to do together.
I think about sex a lot more when I am ovulating. Before my period I think about sex rarely.
EDIT to BeachBum: I would explain it this way, when I am with someone that makes me feel sexy, I think about sex all the time. When I am busy doing other things and not feeling one way or the other, I don't think about it at all. I am not sure if this is typical of women or just me.
I will guarantee you though, if you go around making the women you meet feel sexy, you will never be alone.

I would guess that I average about 7-10 thoughts about sex a day. Typically it is about a current lover or someone I would like to be a lover. I usually fantasize about trying new things or new places.

When I'm involved, I'd say once a day, every day, and I'm thinking about my honey.
When I'm single, it's less often, just when I get horny, to be quite frank. And then I'm thinking about someone I've been with before.
I don't so much care for the idea of f'ing a stranger, so my fantasies don't really involve people I don't know.

At least once every hour, but I don't really dwell on the thought most of the time. I always think about my current boyfriend, and usually I only think about things we have already done. I can't actually think of anything we haven't done.
