The first thing I would recommend is finding a good book on Marine aquarium keeping and locate a quality local shop. Read the book ask question at the shop and proceed from there. Information will be the key to success and obviously there is no way to relate everything you really need to know in this type of format. A quality book will be essential and a quality local shop will be your best friend in having a successful experience with a saltwater aquarium.

you will need to get substrate, for a 55 gal. you'll probably need 3 twenty pound bags. enough aquarium salt for 55 galons a powerhead to get the proper water flow (it should be powerful enough to cycle the water in the entire tank about twice an hour) and you will need live rock or base rock to get more natural filtration, live rock is better because it comes with bacteria living in it and will help the cycling process of you tank. (about 1 pound per gallon) you don't need all of the rock to start with but it's a good idea to start out with some in the tank before you introduce fish.

the best way to start a salt tank is to find USED substrate..(sand gravel)..about.com has some good advise..clean you tank really well before adding the used bottom layer, and start with damsels to fully cycle..PS on the really cheap side you can use mollies..when you get them slowly add salt water to the bag, until the bag is full...about 4 hours..and then release them to your tank..they WILL become food for lion fish and other salt water fish, but hey, nature!

heavily larger tanks are extra trouble-free to guard. If i've got been to estimate the fee of figuring out to purchase for each little thing new, i could say 500-seven-hundred money. Sump-a hundred Protein skimmer-a hundred seventy five+ (dont skimp in this) 20 gallon tank-50 fifty 5 gallon tank-what a hundred and twenty a hundred thirty a hundred and fifty idk powerheads/pump/filter out media-a hundred and forty+ stay rock, i could pass with around 30 lbs or so,-a hundred+ salt blend, or purchase premixed saltwater-40-80 hyrdometer/attempt equipment/chemical ingredients-80 fish dont quote me in this i'm in basic terms guestimating
