In my copy of the book "The Sound and the Fury", there is a reference in the first few pages to an event in the 1940's, and even more references to the 1930's. The reference to the 1940's has something to do with World War II (the resitance or some such thing in France). How can this be if the book was published in 1929?

Surely not in the text of the novel. Are you referring to the introduction, maybe?

The book clearly sets itself in 1928, so I'm not sure where you are getting the 1940's from.
