~~~ The Soccerers are the enforcerers of the Wizards who eat gizzards. That is the only difference between the two.I like deep fried chicken gizzards,and I've been told I'm no Wizard, so I guess I could be a Soccerer (what ever that is) . I like the idea of becoming an Enforcerer. ~~~
Contrary to an above post, the root of the word wizard actually means "wise" as in Medieval times that was the word for a person who practiced magic. Both men and women can be wizards as it is synonymous with magician which is the general term for a magical person. The word wizard came into use before witch, as witch was used to refer to the females. Wizard is also a male magician. A sorcerer (a sorceress the female counter part) is a person who practices sorcery; which is simply advanced magic. Sorcerer can also be used as a general word to refer to both male and females. All sorcerers are wizards, but only some wizards become sorcerers. Sorcery is just higher level magic and can encompass many things. There is the connotation that sorcerers are evil, which is not necessarily so. Sorcerers & wizards are individuals, born with their gifts, and can be malevolent, benevolent but usually are neutral. Any wizard, whether they be a sorcerer or not, that uses magic soley for evil or ill will is practicing a branch of magic called the Dark Arts, so called because magic itself is an art. Magic is neutral in essence as it encompasses good and bad making it neutral. Not all bad is necessarily evil. However there is a fine line between bad and evil. Sorcery is magic, just more powerful and advanced, although it too is neutral in essence.
A wizard is anyone who studies a great deal and becomes an expert in his or her field allowing them to do things within that field that the average person cannot do. Some of these do magic, or do things that seem magical in nature, but it is not a requirement to the title. In the "olden days" just about anything a wizard did was considered magical- like predicting the weather or when the next eclipse would be, because science was magic too. These days there are computer wizards and other sorts. It's one of those words that have evolved somewhat beyond its original meaning, but it's still useful in the magical context.
A sorcerer uses the skills of invocation and evocation to convince (or coerce) spirit beings to do his or her Will. The term relates to a specific type of magic.
Well, I sat down and thought about this, and the only thing I could come up with for a possible answer would be that one is evil, and the other isn't. But that doesn't really work, because people write that either can be evil, or either can be good. So I suppose they might as well be synonyms. Also, I just thought of this, it might possibly be that sorcerers have to do long ritual type spells, and wizards can just have the spell happen. I don't know I am quite interested though, if you ever truly find the answer please let me know. =)
Generally speaking, the difference between the wizard and sorcerer is the source of power by which they accomplish magickal tasks. A wizard deals in naturally occurring energies in his practices. He will saturate his will with power derived from his own personal reserves as well as alternate storages--such as the elements or lunar energies--and send that will out into his environment which will affect change. Sorcerers, on the other hand, rely on energies that exist in other sentient (metaphysical), beings. They tether their will to a demon, for instance, which will spur the demon to obey that sorcerer's intention.
I assume you meant to say sorcerer and wizard
they are both portrayed in rather different ways by different sources, but generally sorcerers are seen to be either one of two things: evil and getting their power from evil spirits, or more natural spell casters that do it inately (very different views I know)
Wizards are generally those who have had to study to learn their magic and are much more academic than sorcerers.
does that help?
Orignally the word "wizard" referred to someone who remained a virgin because it was believed that would increase magical powers. Today, the words are used the same.
