Yes, absolutely. If you don't think you have the evidence or facts to make your position look good then blasting the opposite position will accomplish the same goal. Lobbyists do this kind of stuff all the time.

You can get respect for your point of view by criticizing the opposite stance effectively, but that isn't the same thing as ridicule. By ridiculing the other, you just come across as a bully, and while you might gain followers out of fear, fear is not the same thing as respect for your position.

One can refute another's viewpoint by stating facts. It is not necessary to add ridicule. Ridicule only serves to make the "ridiculer" appear petty.
