its important to keep in mind the whole purpose of the opening. while there are several sound moves the pro's play, pretty much all opening moves are made with intention of controlling the center (whoever controls the center controls the board), and to get their pieces out as quickly as possible (this is called piece development). e2-e4 is probably the best opening for beginners because it leads to exciting attacking games, lets you get your pieces out, controls the central squares, and lets you play as aggressive as you feel like. i would recommend experimenting with a variety of openings though to see what style you are more comfortable with, and most importantly, which are the most fun to play!

Well it depends what style you play. Do you play for small advantages? Or do you play for an endgame. the most common opening is e4 for white. Also d4 leads to an interesting game. If you are playing with the black pieces and opponent opens e4 you could play e5, c5, or even d4. There are almost an endless amount of possibilities of chess openings if you are an am amateur then I would reccomend a begginer chess opening book. If not you may want to dig deep into some advanced openings.

Personal preference says 1.e4.
Seriously though 1. d4 is respectable. So is 1 Nf3, and even 1. c4. The first move f4 has good points. 1.g3, b3, and Nc3 can good in the hands of someone respectable but either transpose or are laughable. 1. b4 is good for shock value in a quick (under 15 minutes) game.
All else is laughable, but f3 or g4 has got to be the worst.
I didn't say anything other than e4, OK? I have a reputation to defend.:)

Move the pawn in front of your king forward 2 squares if you are white and play first. It opens up your queen and bishop at the same time for diagonal moves to advance.

There is no move that gives an immediate and telling advantage. e4 or d4 are the most popular moves, and c4 is a sound way to open too.

1. d4 1. e4 1.Nf3 and 1. c4 are all pretty good, though you should probably stick with e4 if you're a beginner (and I assume you are since your asking this question).

if you are white then your best opining move is to move your pawn in front of the king, one space out,and then your rook three space diagnoly and then your queen two spaces diagnonly, then take then pawn infront of your queen, that will give you check mate and one of the best openning move, but if you are black move your knight to h-7 and counter .

If your white: one that maintains the advantage of moving first.
If your black: one that takes the advantage away.
