I have area rungs that are multicoloured over top of wooden floors. The colour in the drapes is solid, and is picked up in the area rugs. I love rugs with great designs, a la Oriental/Arabic rugs. With wooden flooring, you don't have to worry about matching as much, and there is much more warmth in the rooms.
I used to have really bad allergies and asthma, so entire carpeting was out of the question when decisions were made. Though I don't have the alleriges and asthma anymore due to regular pranayama practice, I still dont want wall-to-wall, as I learned that it's not terribly hygeinic to have wall to wall carpeting.
When you really think about it, area rugs can be cleaned more easily than carpets. Carpets can never be completely clean. If you anlaysed the carpet, and could see what's still there, even after a deep steam clean, you'd be shocked. and what ends up in, and especially under the carpets for the most part stays there. Oh, the wee beasties!
The only place I have tile is in my kitchen, and I don't drape those windows, I have blinds, and they are rarely pulled, as I like to let the sunlight in! Makes it cheerier, and healthier to work in. Plants like it too! In the kitchen, the tiles are a dull colour, so the drapes co-ordinate but are a lot brighter.
I don't advise my Yoga students and Yoga therapy clients to have wall-to-wall carpteting, especially if anyone in the house has allergies or asthma, or there is a dog or cat that sheds in the home, or children/babies crawling on the floor.
Area rugs can be taped down with carpet tape to prevent sliding and potential falls. I highly advise carpet tape for safety.
Hope that helps.
