A put out is the term for getting a batter or runner out. An unassisted put out happens when only one fielder is involved, such as when an outfielder catches a fly ball, or the first baseman grabs a ground ball and touches the bag. An example of an assisted put out would be a ground ball that's fielded by an infielder who throws the ball to the first baseman.

Good Morning Prof! :-) If you really want to get technical with it, perhaps the artists don’t owe the mere fan anything at all. Whether they put out good music, mediocre or bad, they’re not in a situation where we as the fan are debt holders that expect them to make good on a loan. This is what gives the artists the freedom to put out whatever they want. And it works very well on the other side of the coin, too. We as fans don’t owe Band X anything in return. We are under no legal obligation to purchase their work. However, this is where it gets interesting. You often hear bands say “we’d be nothing without you, the fans” but seldom does it ring sincere. Rather it’s scripted BS that they feel obligated to say because everyone else does. However, that is the reality of the situation. A band could be putting forth the most mind-blowing amazing work of all time. And if there are no fans supporting the band, buying their music, and spreading the word, then exactly how well is that band doing? We can sit here and talk about doing things just for the mere love of the art but let’s face it, we all need to eat and pay rent. So when certain acts behave all petulant and snobbish where they act way too self-important to acknowledge their fans in a normal, painless and reasonable manner, I think that speaks volumes to me as the fan and not in a good way. This is a mere reality of life and it’s not just something pertaining to the music world. Something very near and dear to you, Major League Baseball was on the verge of dire financial ruin back in 1994. There were two factors involved. Obviously the strike that cancelled the World Series was huge. But the other part was that the fans were completely turned off by the craptastic attitudes of the typical MLB player. In order to undo the damage it took a massive PR onslaught, where the players were specifically instructed to make themselves more approachable and to INTERACT with the fans. Because when you get right down to it, without fans in the seats, there will be ZERO professional sports. Hard to be called a pro when you aren’t getting paid. Earlier this week, I received a compilation CD of some dark wave music from Australia. I was thrilled to death that considering the distance involved it came damn fast. But then I got a little surprise along with the CD; a signed postcard from the band Angelspit, personally addressing me by name and thanking me for my purchase. They certainly didn’t have to do that nor was I expecting it. However, I couldn’t help but think how super cool of them that was. That was a nice personal touch and as a fan I will remember that. That being said, I can’t help but think about mega super-group Radiohead, who turned the city of Chicago into a bunch of drooling retards over Lollapalooza week. Without those crazed fans, Radiohead would just be another footnote in the Trouser Press of alternative rock. The fact this band that has been lifted into rarified Earth didn’t have the time to acknowledge a fan for all of maybe 30 seconds absolutely sucks. Granted both parties likely behaved in a regrettable fashion. But one fact remains the same. Miley Cyrus is a child. Children often do things they regret, we all have been there at one time or another. I would expect a band of FULLY GROWN adults like Radiohead not to act in such a petulant and arrogant manner. They clearly know better with all their “worldly wisdom” and life experience. And simply from a PR standpoint, it was an ill-advised move. Truth be told, I’m not one of these people that even likes talking to bands or hounding for autographs after the shows, just not my style. Mostly because I would prefer not to know any more of the personal shortcomings of my heroes than need be.

A putout is when a defensive player gets a runner or batter out. An unassisted putout is when he does it w/out any help.
A grounder hit to the shortstop who then throws to the first baseman is a putout for the first baseman and an assist for the SS. A popup right to the SS is an unassisted putout. If the firstbaseman fields a grounder and steps on first himself, that too is unassisted.
Actually, to clarify, I'm not POSITIVE that the SS doesn't also get credit for a putout in the SS to 1B scenario.
