we have been told and shown pictures that it was 2 very small cottages and then knocked through and made into a (very very small)pub-the elderly gent giving us this information only knows that it has two cellars which were blocked up when the pub closed 100 years ago-we are really excited about finding them,seeing whats there and aquiring another room/s-any help would be greatly appreciated.

A cellar wouldn't be in the ceiling, for sure. These places had the rain water draining off the roof, going into a cistern, under the floor, this is where they got there water from. Look in the area under where the kitchen might have been but, be careful. You may not want to have wanted to know where it was, once you've found it.

Use a long one quarter inch rod, about six feet long, to probe the area for soft ground or? again, be careful.

Then, it could have been outside the house but, next to it, put in at a later time. Probe.

go out side and view the structure, do you see any parts comming out that when inside you do not see?? knock on the walls like you are knocking on a door. do you hear any thing hollow?? if these things dont work call an architect, they can help you.

Hmmm...perhaps look for loose wood, or any sections of ceiling a different color than the rest... at last resort, you could remove the ceiling - that would be your best shot.
