I have a renault clio 51plate.
Its had a new battry only for about 4months.

Most of the time it just wont catch. Il have to keep turning the key and reving the accelerator, normally about 3-4 times before it starts. (however sometimes more)

After I get it started the first time (in the morning) its usually OK for the rest of the day and catches on the first or second time.

It is worse in the cold.

Another problem is: about once every week - ten days, it wont even turn over. When turning the key it just clicks. I have to keep turning the key over and over and over in quick succession until eventually after up to 20 times the key turns over... and then the car starts...

Is this one and the same problem?

any suggestions for a cause?

any suggestion for the price to fix it?

Thnx in advance.

A replacement battery will quickly get 'tired' again if you're having to struggle to start the car in the way you describe, endlessly turning it over on the starter.

Then eventually there won't be enough power to turn the starter motor properly, and you get that solenoid clicking.

You have other electrical problems. Start with getting a garage to do a basic tune up of the ignition system, replacing service parts like the spark plugs.

If that doesn't work, a new starter motor may be needed. But it sounds like the starter is working fine, until the power isn't sufficient to turn it properly.

Once getting the car started isn't such a drain on the battery, it should recover. No need to replace that again.

The car has a cold start circuit in the fuel system. The idea is that when the car is cold it will allow more fuel into the engine to help it start. Older cars have a choke to do the same. If there is a problem with the solenoid valve in the system you will get the symptoms that you describe. Take it back to a garage and let them check it out.

Since you have a new battery we can rule it out. I think it may be 2 things. First is your electric starter. It may not have enough power to turn the engine. Also the clicking is most likely from it. May also be an electronic problem. Go to a Renault service to be sure.

Hi, sounds like the solenoid on the starter motor sticking or bad electrical connection which will cause the clicking noise that you hear, take it to a garage or auto electrician, good luck.

The clicking suggests a 'lazy' (sticking) starter motor. Suggest you get this checked. If you need to replace it,ask for a service exchange, this will be quite a bit cheaper than a new one.
Hope this helps.

Hi First thing to do is Tap on the starter while someone else turns the key to start it, that will tell you if the starter is bad. If it starts then the starter is bad, try that first, it may not and the starter can still be bad but this is just a quick diagnosis.

I would get your alternator
checked out as it may not
be charging the battery
and you are taking more out
of it than putting in, this would cause
a lot of your problems..
