No one seems to know! On his sound-effects blog, engineer Steve Hoffman says:

"In talking to the editing guys at [Hanna-Barbera] in the 1980s, they couldn't figure out how the flying car sound effects were made! They wound up having to pull the original 1962 mag tracks and using those for the (awful) 1985 redone episodes. It was easier to do that than to try to recreate the car noises from scratch."

(BTW, that's a "brief quote for review purposes" that doesn't violate copyright laws.)

No, but I have found myself making the gears changing sounds while I'm driving stick and it doesn't even sync up with the car.
