I wouldn't have a problem with them being costly, knowing what they are for. But I am just comparing it to something similar, like a Mezuzah, which can be found for $20 or less.

Both are used to fulfill the same Mitzvah (if I am not mistaken), and according to the Torah, neither has any kind of precedence over the other (except in the literal sense where the Tefillin is listed before the Mezuzah in the writings). At the same time, they both (or at least both are supposed to) contain a portion of Kosher Torah. Please help explain!

Well, its for everyday use and some care has been taken to make it right. Kosher animal skin and tendons, hand made, etc. It has to be comfortable too. Is about 250 dollars really too much (I looked at e-bay)? One would easily pay this much for a good pair of leather shoes, right?

I'm so glad you came up with this question I will put my 2 cents into this question but hope somebody out there might have a better oppinion then I. It'll be nice to ge the price down it seems there is kosher price gouging also at the tefillin pumps.

I think perhaps cause there is more envolved in the process of making them the leather certainly might have a role to play and the diffrent sizes as well but I think it still to high it'll be nice for a beis din to get envolved in getting there prices down some.

It depends on the seller. Ask them personally.
