Islam sets a merit of greatness on piety, regardless of relationships, wealth and castes.
After the demise of Prophet Muhammad pbuh, All the Muslims selected Abu Baker Siddique (may Allah be please on him) as the first Caliph of Islam, based upon the real merit of Islam, the most pious man and suitable for Caliphate.
The people who believe that the family relationship with Muhammad pbuh, is the merit of greatness, they wanted Ali bin Abu Taalib the cousin and son in law of Muhammad pbuh, be a Caliph. But he was too young at that time, (so he became the fourth Caliph).
This is the main problem, that created Sunnis and Shiites in Islam.
Later on the elder son of Ali bin abu Taalib, Hassan bin Ali (may Allah be pleased on him), succeeded to reunite the two main groups in Islam. But the after that the second son of Ali Husain bin Ali, destroyed the whole environment, by walking on the same track of his father.
