Hell, like heaven, is not only a state of existence, but a literal, and very real, place. It is a place where the unrighteous will experience never-ending, eternal wrath from God. They will endure emotional, mental, and physical torment, consciously suffering from shame, regret, and contempt.
Hell is described as a bottomless pit (Luke 8:31, Revelation 9:1), and a lake of fire, burning with sulfur, where the inhabitants will be tormented day and night forever and ever (Revelation 20:10). In hell, there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth, indicating intense grief and anger (Matthew 13:42). It is a place “where the worm never dies and the fire never goes out” (Mark 9:48). God takes no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but desires them to turn from their wicked ways so that they can live (Ezekiel 33:11). But He will not force us into submission; if we choose to reject Him, He has little choice but to give us what we want – to live apart from Him.

Whatever else we can say about Hell the worst torture will be the fact that we denied the love and mercy of God when we were alive and that for eternity we shall be in a state of loveless existence.
The fact that Satan rules in Hell suggests that he will do unspeakable tortures to the souls of human beings simply because he hates us so much.
According to scripture there is in fact a type of fire in Hell that will not be anything like earthly fire but something far more worse.

What you describe is called the pain of loss, this is the worst of the experiences of hell, loss of sanctifying grace ie love ie God.
In addition to this is the pain of sense whereby creation will revenge itself upon the sinner who chose things of the world instead of God. This punishment will be different for each according to the sins commited. The bible describes this as the worms that never die and the fire.

Hell, like satan, is a Christian invention. If you look away from religion and search for your connection with the Eternal Energy / Lifeforce/ Creator, you will never need to ask this question. I believe some people choose to have hell in their reality and these souls are victims of organised religion. Somebody told them there was a hell and an aweful God who would send them there if they didn't fall to their knees and admit they were worthless and in need of a dose of purgatory! In actual fact God is a bit bigger than the one they worship.

I agree with your hypothesis (those in Hell live forever apart from God). As Christians, we are obliged to believe that Hell exists, but we can hope and pray that no human soul is imprisoned there.
