I think the core of your question is that eternal thorn "Why?" How is easy....why do you want to totally believe in god? Is it just so you feel better accepted in your community? So your son will feel better accepted? I can tell that religion played a very important role in your up-bringing, and that you wish for it to have the same importance for your son, which will undoubtedly lead to him asking the same question in 20 years, lol. If you want to be there for your son, go for it, but why force yourself to do something or attempt to do something that so obviously is not in your nature to do? It sounds like you want to force belief upon yourself...that's like making someone eat salad, because "it has to be good for you, so I will force you to eat it!" What if you're allergic? lol...bad example, but I hope you catch the drift. If you want to be there for your son, then be there....and ask yourself realistically, am I doing more good or harm to my son when I pretend, and am I doing myself any good or harm? False pretense is a razor's edge, my friend.

I had the very same question a long time ago. I had some Mormon family members and friends. They seemed to be the only really happy people that I knew. I wanted what they had; Faith in God and Peace in their hearts. I prayed to know if what they had was of God. God answered my prayer with a very sweet feeling that if I lived the way they lived, I would be happy as they are. I now belong to the most loving community of people you could ever want to meet! I urge you to look up the Mormon Missionaries on LDS.org and ask to hear their message of love, Peace and hope and happiness.
They have the largest and oldest women's organization on Earth and a fabulous program for kids. You do not have to join their church to benefit from these great organizations, you are welcome to attend and you will be loved and welcomed and your son will be in an environment that is safe and fun! He will make friends with good kids who have values and goals. I promise you that you will be very well fed spiritually. You will be guided to know of God and His great goodness. You will be among the nicest group of Christians that you have ever imagined! Please do you and your boy a favor and go join these people of faith and goodness. I will pray for you!

first off i would like to said i am a catholic as well...and i too lost my faith some time ago.

can i ask u 1 thing?
are u happier when u believe or are u happier now?
to me its don't matter if God is real or not.
but its base on you, to live what you think is right.
God is just one of the right path u can go, a way to teach your son what is right n what is wrong.
if u don't believe in him its find..because God is a kind and loving person....i don't think he would sent 1/2 or more of earth population to hell just for not believing in him.
If you want total faith in God then just don't question anything in the Bible. For all the words in there is man written, not God.

as for me i have my faith again, because believing in him give me hope...n made me feel happier then when i have nothing to believe in. I just don't question it anymore.

It's a pretty difficult thing to put yourself in him entirely, I certainly couldn't. I find it interesting that you are verging on agnostic/atheist and actually want to believe in him. If I were you would I embrace this doubt and start looking for better answers if the ones Catholicism gives you are unsatisfactory.

You shouldn't accept or encourage yourself to believe in the answers that people tell you, you should search untill you find an answer that suits you. By even doubting God you are realising that God, to you, does not hold all the answers.

Belief on God comes only by HIS blessings. The blessings can be earned from HIM by way of acquiring purity in mind. The purity of mind comes through meditation towards the GOD which is considered to be the first step to pray for the blessings of God. Do in that manner and achieve your goal.

By negating reality. Sorry but that is the only way. You have to go accept the bible as the only reality. Otherwise be happy in the knowledge that there is no god and that the story of science is by far more interesting and mind boggling than let there be light.

Faith is not something you produce on your own it's a gift from God and it was given to you in baptism.

To "reactivate" this gift that you somehow lost you can go to confession. And God will give you grace, even the grace of faith again.

God does care for you, more than you will ever understand, He loves you so much you can never fathom it entierly, even in heaven. Because God's love for you is eternal.

Here are some of my favourite scriptures.

James 4:14
Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes.

Proverbs 14:10
Each heart knows its own bitterness, and no one else can share its joy.

What ever you are suffering that is the bless of GOD. He is moulding you to believe in him. You have a complete faith on him but a layer of un-faithness is on you. Do any good work and think that everything GOD is doing for you, Your little faith on him is enough to get him.

For those who do not have faith in God, fear is a way to protect them. But if faith is strong, there is no anxiety about something in danger. Faith in the divine and faith in one's faith. You know everything is being protected, and everything is being taken care of.
