It is a good thing to be nervous before a fight because it lets you know your human. Best thing to do is relax and don't stress out over little things like them being bigger or older because that has nothing to do with skills. Another thing is it has nothing to do with being a girl. I did the same when i was in competition and I'm a guy. You should be proud you are skilled enough to spar against black belts. Just take deep breaths before the match and relax. Just remember it's just mind over matter.

There used to be a comment among the Karate practitioners that I kept hearing back when I was a kid that went something like:" Brown Belts tend to be better than Blackbelts because they're hungrier and feel that they still need to prove themselves." And most the time, I see a Brown belt whoop some Blackbelt's butt in matches or give them a really hard time. So there really is no need to panic, a belt is just something to hold your pants up no matter what color. What matters is what you put into your training, if you gave it your all, then you won't have any problem. It's the person wearing the belt who gives it value not the other way around. As for your nerves, it's a good sign, that means your reflex are gonna work overtime and your adrenaline is gonna get a jumptstart. Just learn to breath evenly and focus, other than that, you'll be alright, most of the cause for your attack of nerves comes from your mind, once you get focused on the task at hand, you'll calm down a bit, try warming up and stretching before your match to keep your mind occupied.

Well, for starters REMEMBER you are a brown belt, you are no novice, a brown belt is a very accomplished karateka, you've earned it with sweat and blood.
I participated in karate tournaments where I have to do kumite against older, more experience fighters (as a yellow belt, against orange belts), my green-belt teammates had to go against brown and black belts. My advice is to keep your guard up! even though you are going for points, your opponent can potentially hurt you, but if you have your hands up and your defense strong, you'll be more confident.
If you want to calm down, take some chamomille tea, do breating excercises, practice your Kata.
Being nervous is normal :)

Ok, I have to ask, what sort of a tournament is this. I have never seen a tournament where a Brown Belt competed against Black Belts. I am a Black Belt in TKD and have competed in many tournaments. I have never seen this. You should not have to compete against them. But on the same note, nerves and such are natural, they are good things. They keep you more alert and focused. Its awesome if you can win against them. But remember, just becuase someone is a BB, doesnt mean they will wipe the floor with you. I have seen BB's in a class get their butts kicked by beginners. Just go in there with confidence and focused on what you must do, you will do fine.

I always find that a lot of energy can shake any nerves. Go to your local store and get some caffeine in your system (although the 5 Hour Energy stuff is the best). This will shake your fear and get you pumped up.
I think the main reason for your fear though is a lack of self confidence..... Be bold, get a little cocky, and be confident

i wouldnt say its because your a girl. but girls do tend to stress more. you might want to try meditation.
speaking out of experience the more you compete the easier they will become to stay calm. you just have to focus on your goal of the comp. and allow your self to have fun because thats what its all about.
and on another note if your fighting what your saying your are and you r only a brown belt and u win you dont have to much to worry about and just shows you that a black belt is just a belt. not the person thats wearing it. keep your self calm and stick to your game and you should do fine

look pal, Before I start to answer this question I have to say
" You Are Not A Girl!" You are doing this painful sport for a long time right? first of all you trust yourself!
It's quite normal you to feel like this. It's about the number of the tournaments you've joined. You are gonna feel better after each tournament! Plus you must face that someone can hurt you like you can hurt someone else. If you don't accept that then you can't be successful.
I wish you luck ans success for tomorrow!

You're 19, a brown belt, and you get THAT nervous?
Who promoted you? Captain Crunch?
The point of reaching your level is to attain a level of confidence in your abilities that you shouldn't "shake with fear and feel sick."
Go back to your teacher, turn in your belt, and say that you need to go back a few levels and learn the lessons better.
Seriously.
Would you want the doctor who is operating on your mother's heart or your child's brain tumor to be THIS nervous, even IF s/he has an M.D.?

If you can, focus on your breathing and try to meditate. It is very difficult, but it is the best way to become calm.
