My best friend is getting married at the end of the month, and she and her fiance filed for a marriage license in Kansas (where they live). However, their wedding ceremony will be taking place in Missouri. Does it matter if the license came from another state than where the ceremony is taking place?

Your friend will need to get a marriage license in Missouri. She should know that there is a mandatory 3 day waiting period. In most states, the waiting period does not include Saturdays, Sundays or holidays. In some instances, the day the application is filed is not included within the waiting period.

Both parties must be at least 18 years of age. Each applicant must present some form of government issued (federal or state) identification (e.g. valid driver's license, a state identification card, a passport, etc.). Also, each applicant must provide proof of a valid social security number if the government issued identification does not contain a social security number. If an applicant does not have a social security number, a statement must be signed stating that fact. Blood tests are NOT required to apply for a marriage license.

The fee for a marriage license application is $45. Payment is accepted in CASH ONLY. The fee is non-refundable. A keepsake certificate of marriage may be purchased for an additional $1.

You need to have a marriage license not only from the state that you are going to be married in, but the city or county. Check online for the closest town hall near the ceremony site.

Your friend needs to return to the (Kansas) Marriage License Department NOW. If she has her Marriage License, she needs to take it with her, and she needs to tell the Clerks at the Marriage License Department what she intends to do (marry in another state). The Clerks at the Marriage License Department are the only people that can give her the correct answer (whether the Marriage License can be used in another state). I'm pretty sure that you have to have a license from the state in which you actually marrying. Once you are married your license is valid everywhere. But when you get married you must obtain a license from that state. Try calling the county registrars office, a clerk there should know for absolute sure.

They will have to get married in the state that issues their license. Most states will not recognize a license from another state. She will have to get her license from where they are getting married in Missouri.

As far as I know, not only is the license supposed to be issued by the state in which the wedding is to be, but also in the county. The county courthouse issues the license. You are supposed to obtain the license in the county in which you are to be married. It doesn't matter if you are from that county or not; only matters that that is where the wedding will be. She needs to obtain her license in the county in MO where the wedding will be.

The best thing to do in this case, is to have the LEGAL marriage done in the state the license was issued in. And the COMMITMENT ceremony wherever they want the party to take place. In most cases you can go to the court house/jp/officiant in your home state and just have a simple, elopement type ceremony. Still have the big party and what amounts to a retaking of the vows in the place you have booked for your wedding.

Yes, you need a license from Rhode Island. Probably in the county that you are getting married at there. Just go to the local courthouse of the county where the restaurant is, and get it there.

She will need to apply for a license in the place where she will marry. The license she has is invalid in the scenario you describe. She will have to apply for one in Missouri.
