Fight in the cause of Allah those who fight you, but do not transgress limits; for Allah loveth not transgressors 2:190
And kill them wherever you find them, and drive them out from whence they drove you out, and persecution is severer than slaughter, and do not fight with them at the Sacred Mosque until they fight with you in it, but if they do fight you, then slay them; such is the recompense of the unbelievers. 2:191
And fight them on until there is no more Tumult or oppression, and there prevail justice and faith in Allah; but if they cease, Let there be no hostility except to those who practise oppression. 2:193
Then, when the sacred months have passed, slay the idolaters wherever ye find them, and take them (captive), and besiege them, and prepare for them each ambush. But if they repent and establish worship and pay the poor-due, then leave their way free. Lo! Allah is Forgiving, Merciful 9:5
Fight them, and Allah will punish them by your hands, cover them with shame, 9:14

I commend you for reading it - even if it's only so you can criticize or debate about Islam, I think that everyone should make the effort to read the Qur'an first.
2:190 means that Muslims should defend themselves against anyone who tries to fight them, but not to take it too far. Pretty reasonable.
2:191 says to slay those who attempt to come inside the mosque and fight Muslims, for they have crossed a boundary that should not be crossed. Also reasonable, if you ask me.
2:193 "Let there be no hostility except to those who practise oppression" - a Muslim should not harbour anger against nonbelievers, except those who attempt to oppress Islam and its believers.
9:5 This one I cannot explain; it is one of the verses that I too struggled with understanding, and part of the reason I did not choose Islam, actually.
9:14 same thing.

All its saying is that you have the right to fight to defend yourself.
It tells you in 2:190, that you can fight but not be the aggressor. That point is very clear. Wonder how could that be viewed as violent
In 2:191, it appears to be telling you that those who drove you out of your land and have occupied your land can be driven out of your land. I see nothing wrong with that. Will you not fight back if someone came and occupied your country? Will you not fight to defend your country and drive the aggressor out? That's all it is saying.
In 2:193, it is simply saying that you should only fight the ones who fight you but show no hostilities toward those who do not fight you. How could that be unpeaceful.
In 9:5, we see a reference to the sacred months. That is in relation to a treaty that was signed between the Muslims and the pagans of Mecca. It was a non-aggression pact. The treaty was violated by the pagans at several occasions. It was decided that the Muslims will give the pagans 4 months to show that they have stopped violating the pact. If they don't stop breaking the treaty during the 4 month period then they must leave the area or face war.
Just because you feel that you have the right to live in peace and you should defend that right, that does not make you an aggressor.

In the name of Allah the most merciful The most Gracious.
My friend if you sincerely want to learn about Islam or the
interpretation and meaning of The Quranic verses Then please ask those with knowledge like an Islamic scholar or an Islamic center. On yahoo Question and answers you will get any tom dick and harry who have no knowledge of Islam and are Trained to Hate this religion and the scriptures as well as the prophet Muhammad[pbuh] trying to spew their Ignorance and hatred at the slightest opportunity.
To understand these verses you will have to understand the
prevelant situation at those times of Ignorance in the Arab
world .Idol worship, and fighting between clans and tribes
was the order of the day.It was the law of the jungle where
only the fittest would survive and they only understood the
language of the sword.Great historians termed the Arabs of
those times as Human brutes wandering the sands of Arabia
and no one was interested in this human trash,The romans
passed them by, the Persians passed them by and even
Alexandra the great passed them by but no one was interested in this human garbage. They worshiped Gods in
different form and Idolatry was at its Zenith.
Now imagine against such a back drop Allah the almighty
sends the prophet Muhammad [pbuh] to preach to them that
there is only one God and that he was the messenger of
God and ask them to stop worshiping idols, and to obey the
commands of almighty God !And so as everyone would like
to believe this man Muhammad [pbuh] took up a sword and
began converting people to Islam ? Honestly tell me if this
would be possible.
But instead he began his mission with caution and first
preached his concept of Allah the almighty to his wife and
friends and they immediately believed him because he was
know to be a truthful Man of Character. As his followers Grew
steadily the Mushreeks [ idolators] began to harress the
prophet [pbuh] and his followers ,in many Instances they were
ridiculed, insulted, beaten up, tortured, and even put to death.
but because they were small in number they could not fight
back,Then when they plotted to kill the prophet [pbuh] he
had no choice but to migrate from Makka to Madina, here he
found the people of Ansar who believed in his message and
were ready to lay down their lives for the religion.Only now
when the Muslims were a sizable number then Allah the almighty ordered the Prophet not to suffer oppression, but
go out and fight those who oppress , fight for the truth, fight for
honor, fight to defend themselves and their religion. But Allah
the almighty commands them not to commit excess's even
while fighting and if the enemies desire peace give them
peace and security. And but natural Allah the almighty commands the prophet [pbuh] to kill the enemy on the battle
field .No army General or president of any country will tell its
army go out and fight and on the battle field get killed or offer
the other Cheek.
Islam is the religion of Truth , It is all about RIGHTS &
LIMITATIONS. It is a practical way of life.
If you will read the bible it also says to pick up the sword and
fight and kill those who blasfermeth the lord.
If you read the Bhagwat Gita and mahabaharat it is full of
fighting , more than the Quran , yet we say that it is the fight
of Good over evil. Why then do people take out verses from
the Holy Quran and interpret them out of context to mean something else ???

Islam is a peaceful religion but you need to understand the sociopolitical conditions which was present during the birth of the religion.
You should compare how many other instances where the religion teaches its believers not to be violent, to treat everyone equally, to not even overload beasts of burden etc etc.
It is peaceful but it in no way advocates its believers to turn the other cheek when certain transgressions have been made. That said and done. The religion makes it perfectly clear that the biggest war, is the war against one self.
If you are able to deal with the matter without violence, then it is the highest personal victory possible.

You answered your own question when you qouted the first verse.
"Fight in the cause of Allah those who fight you but do not transgress limits , for Allah loveth not transgressors"
transgress - do not over step boundries or go over the line you are forbidden to
The above verse means ............ Fight in the name of Allah only if people are fighting with you & when you do fight them do not go against the laws of Islam or the teachings of the Quran.
The rest of the verses only applies in a situation where people are continously fighting muslims without listening to their reasoning to be peaceful.
So basicaly Islam is a truthful & peaceful religion........... if you carry on reading the Quran , you will come across verses such as: Allah forbids the killing of women & children , old people & innocent people.
Fight them & Allah will punish them by your hands , cover them with shame....
Again the above verse only applies when someone is fighting with you, if they do not fight with you , as a muslim you have no right or justification to harm them & if you do it is considered a sin.
In the verse 9:5 - Allah says if they ask your forgiveness or want peace - Forgive them - as a muslim if you are in battle and people ask for the fighting to stop , you should stop immediatly.
Read the Quran within its proper context & you will find that it is thee most peaceful & truthful book.

Um the whole purpose of islam is to take over the world. Then there can only be peace. Alot of these muslims on here dont know what the hell they are talkin about. No where in sura 9 does it say only if they do something to you. It says kill them wherever u find them, wait for them, besige them. Where in sura 9 does it say only for self defense? Islam is a book of contradictions and theres a verse in the koran that says if verses contradict each other the one that is said later cancels out the earlier one. And from my knowledge only people that go to paradise are muslims who fight in allahs cause. There whole ideology is to take over the world. Just look at what they believe in there is no god but allah and mohammed is the messenger, so where does everyone else go ummmmmmmmmmm essentailly hell.

All religions are a mass of contradictions. People have the ability to close their minds to the contradictions, or prefer to interpret them differently, so as to suit their chosen way of acting. Remember, in spite of what the religions teach, books such as the Bible, the Koran, or any other 'Holy' book, is written by people! People like you and me, subject to the same prejudices, biases, faults and contradictions and gross errors in thought. There is no such thing as 'Divine Inspiration'. Don't be surprised by what you read in the Koran, just be surprised at peoples abilities to justify their actions, good and bad, by quoting a passage from it.

The Koran is full of verses that exhort Muslims to murder, rape, torture and pillage against non-Muslims, very few of which are couched in specifics or limited at all. There are also a few that say to be peaceful to non-Muslims who desire peace.
This does not prove that Muslims are commanded to inhumane action only against non-Muslims with whom they are at war. It only exemplifies the inconsistency of the supposedly divinely-inspired Muhammed. But, coming from a pedophile that changed the rankings of holy cities depending on the attitudes toward him/his religion of their inhabitants, wrote about a battle in which angels sent from Allah ‘forgot to show up’, etc., etc., this is hardly surprising. Either Allah – if we want to credit his existence – or Muhammed is very, very inconsistent. Either way, its laughable that the Islamic religion is taken seriously by any of its practitioners, as it is not only ridiculously inaccurate and inconsistent, but violent and extremist as well.

any religion(regardless it's islam or not)is religion of peace.
but also in any religion.u have to be tolerant to what others do to u.but if those people kill u and ur family and ur children.no religion and no logic says to be peacful with them.
u may have seen mel gibson movie(the partiot).
he was peacful and away of war.but when english killed his son he had to be involved in the war.not because he is not peacful.but to protect his country and children from what english people could do to them.
I can tell u that I went to egypt which is an islamic country.and faced muslims there.and notcied that bin ladin and sadam are not considered as muslims in there eyes because they killed innocent people either americans or iraqis.
just try to always look for the truth because our media never tell us the truth of what's happening in islam and muslims countries....
