I often find myself in my parents' church. (used to be mine, too but haven't attended in some time). I find myself there with friends. After a while I am alone going up the back stairway of the church. The more I go up, the darker it gets and the more narrow the steps get. Also the farthe rup I go I feel more and more fearful (not like 'fear of spiders' fear, but intense terror type of fear. Then I get lost on the stairway and can't get out. This same dream often reoccurs as I am in an unfamiliar house. The farther back into the house I go I feel this same growing fear and I can never find my way out. I am always stuck in these places, just getting more and more lost. I have these dreams about once every six months or so and have had them since I was about 12 or 13 years old. I'm 39 now.

You may have a depressed outlook on life and as you get older it gets darker and you become more fearful. The church represents religion and the fact that you are going up represents aging and also seeking (heavenly) relationship with God . You feel like you cannot find a closeness with God and the strange house represents unknown territory. Perhaps you have never had a relationship with God and only went to church because your parents did. It is never too late to have a real relationship with God. He is right there and waiting for you to call upon Him. Perhaps the church your parents have attended does not meet the requirements for what you need in a relationship with God and you may need to seek some other kind of church or denomination.

Recurring dreams want us to resolve something. Think about what issues have been unresolved since that time. Make a journal to help you think this out. How does your parents church symbolize something in your life? Make a list of the things that make the most sense to you. Our dreams come from our own minds. They are messages to us from our subconscious.

What could it mean that the stairs become narrower as you go up, and your terror increases? You have also left your friends behind, and are now on your own path. Could this represent an estrangement? Especially an unresolved one. Perhaps you have not fully accepted your reluctance to go to your parents church?

You have to answer these questions. I can only suggest possibilities for your dreams. Dream interpretation is not set in cement. But it does come from you. What seems to strike the loudest chord with you is probably the best answer.

There is a phase of brain development where we have very frightening dreams. We usually finish this stage by the age of 7, but not everyone does. It could be a physical reference to that part of your development. This is not a psychological effect, it's purely physical. It's known as "Night Terrors."

Take this with a grain of salt, I am not a psychologist, and have never studied psychology.
Having said that, it sounds like you have a problem with planing, or a fear of the future. You start a project or something, and everything looks fine. But you failed to plan it properly, or you didn't allow enough flexibility for things to change. Then you get 'lost'. You find yourself with no direction, and the more you try to dig your way out, the situation gets worse.
It could be not an actual problem like this, but a fear of screwing it up because of this.

it may be that there was something that happened earlier in your life that you have a hard time getting over. The more you try to move on and go further the scarier it becomes. It may also be that you r trying to move on and start something new but your scared of being trapped in an unfamiliar place.
