I have a pretty bad sunburn on my shoulder and now the muscle is killing me- does anyone know of a correlation between sunburns and muscle pain?

Sunburn affects the muscles and the nerves. That's why you're feeling such intense pain, it's from the nerves. Sun burn is very serious. Always use a sun block when you are out in the sun. Skin cancer is on the rise because of less protection in the environment from the UVA rays of the sun.

I don't think there is any correlation between the two other than they both rely on nociceptors to tell the brain that there is pain. Nociecptors are thin nerve fibers in the skin, muscle, and other body tissues, that, when stimulated, carry pain signals to the spinal cord and brain. Normally, nociceptors only respond to strong stimuli such as a pinch. However, when tissues become injured or inflamed, as with a sunburn or infection, they release chemicals that make nociceptors much more sensitive and cause them to transmit pain signals in response to even gentle stimuli such as breeze or a caress. This condition is called allodynia -a state in which pain is produced by innocuous stimuli. Best thing to do is to take a luke warm bath and some Tyenol. Keep the sunburn area moisturized and wait it out.

Mix together 1 part desitine baby rash ointment and 1 part Preparation H. Rub on your sunburn for instant relief. Take a midol or pamprin for the muscle pain, it works much better than any OTC pain killers. My fiance had pulled his back and regular pain killers wouldn't work so I gave him two midols and the pain was almost gone within the hour. It's a muscle relaxer and anti inflamatory.
